In a clustered configuration, a relatively small number of high-powered SMP systems are operated in parallel. Application software that is to take advantage of parallelism must be designed to do so, but because the number of systems in a cluster is smaller than it is with typical MPP systems, the software decomposition that must take place is not so extensive.
